Description

Amytal® Sodium is a barbiturate derivative. Barbituates are non-selective central nervous system (CNS) depressants that are primarily used as sedative hypnotics.

As a barbiturate, Amytal Sodium depresses the sensory cortex, decreases motor activity, alters cerebellar function and produces drowsiness, sedation and hypnosis.

Indications

Amytal Sodium is indicated for use as a a) sedative, b) hypnotic for the short-term treatment of insomnia (up to two weeks) and c) preanasthetic.

Side Effects

Amytal Sodium is contraindicated for patients with hypersensitivity to barbiturates. Amytal Sodium may be habit forming. Tolerance, psychological and physical dependence may occur with continued use. The most commonly observed adverse reaction is sleepiness or feeling drowsy (estimated to occur at a rate of 1 to 3 patients per 100).

How Supplied

Amytal Sodium is available as 0.5g per vial, to be dissolved in 5mL. sterile water for injection, to prepare a 10 percent solution.
